Fred Lerner has been a librarian and bibliographer for more than forty years, and was one of the founders of the Science Fiction Research Association. His first book, Modern Science Fiction and the American Literary Community, was a scholarly study of science fiction's changing reputation in America. In The Story of Libraries: From the Invention of Writing to the Computer Age, he has written about the role of libraries in shaping as well as reflecting the societies in whichthey arose.
